WARNING: Jobless Claims Rise - How are you going to find a job if so many people are unemployed?

By Ilene Rein, Executive Recruiter and Job Search Strategist

This month saw more grim news on the unemployment front. The number of Americans filing for jobless claims rose to 248,000, an increase of 23,000. Overall, there are 6.5 million people unemployed in this country.

And with all the bad news regarding employment figures and the economy, perhaps the scariest part of it all is the number of people who are not even looking for work anymore due to complete frustration with the job searching process and have no idea of how to get hired.

When it comes to finding a job, you are in control. There are many things that can help increase your chances and one of them is being proactive about what types of industries interests show up on an employer's radar screen so they know how best to position themselves for success!

Let’s take a look at some things that you as a job seeker can do to increase your chances of getting noticed and hired.

The difficulty in getting a job is usually because you are not looking hard enough. The most important thing to do when searching for jobs, more than going on websites like Monster or Indeed, should be tapping into your social network and asking around - most people know somebody who's hiring and might get us onto the ground floor of something that could change our careers!

The best way to find a job is by networking, and the first step is just getting started! Join associations in your field or volunteer for projects that are relevant. It's all about interacting with people- building an extensive list of contacts who can help you when it comes time for searching through resumes (and maybe even offer some advice themselves).
