Stop Applying. Start Doing This Instead...
ILENE REIN | Executive Recruiter & Job Search Strategist | Pounding Pavement 101
The January Trap
It's January. You're motivated. You've got that fresh start energy and you're ready to find a new job.
So you do what everyone does. You start applying.
You scroll through job boards. You click "easy apply." You send out 10, 20, 50 applications. You feel productive. You're doing the work.
And then... nothing.
No calls. No emails. Maybe a few automated rejections. Mostly just silence.
You start to wonder if something is wrong with you. If you're not qualified. If nobody is hiring.
But that's not what's happening. The problem isn't you. The problem is that you're applying with broken tools.
Why Your Applications Disappear
The average job posting receives around 250 applications ( I have seen even 1700+ ). About 75% of resumes get rejected by applicant tracking systems before a human ever sees them.
That means most resumes never reach a Recruiter. They get filtered out by software before anyone even knows you applied.
And here's what most job seekers don't realize. Those systems filter based on how Recruiters search.
If your resume doesn't present it based on a Recruiter's experienced eye, you're invisible. It doesn't matter how qualified you are. The system can't find you.
As an experienced Executive Recruiter & Job Search Strategist I know exactly how we search for candidates. And I can tell you that most resumes are not set up the way Recruiters actually look for people.
You could be the perfect candidate. But if your resume isn't speaking the language that Recruiters and ATS systems understand, nobody will ever know you exist.
The Same Problem on LinkedIn
It's not just your resume. Your LinkedIn profile has the same issue.
You could have 500 connections. You could have a great photo and a nice summary. But if your profile isn't optimized for how Recruiters actually search, you're invisible there too.
LinkedIn is a search engine. And if you don't understand how Recruiters use that search engine, you're missing opportunities every single day.
The Hidden Job Market Nobody Talks About
Here's something that changes everything once you understand it.
About 70% of jobs are never posted publicly.
They get filled through internal moves. Referrals. Conversations that happen before a job req ever hits a job board.
When you spend all your time on job boards, you're only seeing about 30% of what's actually out there. And you're competing against everyone else who's doing the same thing.
The other 70%? That's the hidden job market. And most job seekers have no idea how to access it.
It's not about luck. It's not about knowing how to access these hidden roles. There are specific strategies for tapping into opportunities that never get posted. But nobody teaches this stuff.
So job seekers keep applying to the same jobs that are posted. Competing against 250 other people. Wondering why nothing is working.
What You Should Do Before You Apply to Anything
Before you send another application, you need to fix the foundation.
Your resume needs to be built based on how Recruiters actually search. That means the right keywords in the right places. The right format that ATS systems can read. Clear proof that you've done what employers need you to do. I cannot tell you how many resumes I see that I say to myself 'What were they thinking!?!'
Your LinkedIn profile needs to be optimized to attract Recruiters. That means showing up in search results. That means having a profile that makes Recruiters want to reach out to you, rather than you chasing them. If your LinkedIn profile looks inactive or you look unapproachable, guess what, you are not getting the call.
And you need a strategy for accessing the hidden job market. Networking. Referrals. Direct outreach. Building relationships with Recruiters before jobs are ever posted. Do not wait until you need something from a Recruiter. If you have built an ongoing relationship with a Recruiter, when you reach out, they will answer your call.
This is what I teach my clients. It's the reason they're landing jobs in 3 to 8 weeks instead of 9 to 12 months.
The Math That Changes Everything
Think about this.
If you apply to 100 jobs with a resume that isn't optimized, most of those applications go nowhere. You might get one or two responses if you're lucky.
But if you fix your resume first, suddenly your applications actually get seen. One well written resume based on how Recruiters search can outperform 100 generic ones.
And if you learn how to access the hidden job market, you're no longer competing against 250 people for every opening. You're having conversations before jobs get posted. You're getting referred in. You're skipping the line entirely.
That's the difference between a 10 month job search and an 8 week job search.
A Quick Checklist Before You Apply Again
Is your resume built based on how Recruiters actually search for candidates?
Does your LinkedIn profile have the right set up to show up in Recruiter searches?
Do you know how to find jobs that are never posted publicly?
Do you have a strategy for getting referrals and introductions?
Are you spending time building relationships with Recruiters?
If you answered no to any of these, you have work to do before sending more applications. Otherwise you're just spinning your wheels.
The Cost of Doing It Wrong
The average job search takes about 6 months. Some people search for much longer. I have spoken to people who have been on the job search for two years! That is just unacceptable! Every week you spend applying with a broken resume is a week wasted.
That's not just frustrating. That's money you're not earning. That's savings you're burning through. That's confidence you're losing with every rejection.
Job seekers who fix their marketing documents and learn how to access the hidden job market get hired faster. That's not an opinion. That's what happens when you understand how recruiting actually works. Check out the detailed statistics about the Pounding Pavement 101 program. What To Do Next...
If this sounds like you, you're not alone. Most job seekers have never been taught how any of this works. They were told to apply and hope for the best. Nobody showed them how Recruiters actually search or where the real opportunities are hiding.
That's exactly what I do with my clients. I spent 15+ years as a Recruiter. I know how we search for candidates. I know what makes us stop scrolling and pay attention. And I know how to get you in front of the right people without competing against 300 other applicants.
My clients are landing jobs in 3 to 8 weeks instead of 9 to 12 months. Not because they're more qualified. Because they understand how to be seen.
If you want to stop wasting time and start getting results, let's talk. Schedule a call and we'll figure out the best path forward for your job search.
