So, you’ve taken the plunge and updated your LinkedIn profile to show that you’re open to work.
Great choice!
But what happens next?
Suddenly, your notifications explode with messages from people inviting you to connect.
I will tell you that I get those types of comments on my posts, too.
You’d think you were at a massive networking event where everyone skipped the small talk and headed straight for the “let's connect” line.
But here’s the kicker: most of these folks aren't the next Steve Jobs looking to offer you a job—they’re just scammers lurking beneath the surface.
Buckle up, because we’re driving into this crazy world together!

The Tsunami of “Let’s Connect” Comments
Once your “open to work” banner is live, it feels like you’ve thrown a big ol' party, and scammers are the uninvited guests who just won’t leave. It’s like if you put a neon sign on your front lawn flashing “FREE FOOD”—you’ll have people come out of the woodwork!
I know many job seekers who changed their status to “open to work” and were immediately bombarded with messages. One charming fellow even offered a “guaranteed job” if she just wired him a small fee.
According to recent statistics, approximately 30% of individuals who publicly announce job-seeking status receive connection requests that are likely to be from scammers. I mean, who knew being jobless could be so popular?
Did you receive requests like this to connect?
The Scams You Never Knew Existed
Scammers today are slicker than ever — they’ve got tactics that are just plain wild. From fake jobs that ensure you “get rich quick” to offers from recruiters who “just need your credit card info”, the amount of creativity is astounding. And even the sharpest of people get caught off guard and fall victim.
A LinkedIn survey showed that 53% of job candidates have encountered a scam during their job search. And, unfortunately the only thing they ended up with was a lesson in how NOT to trust a stranger on the internet.

Things To Do To Protect Yourself from the Online Scammers
So, how do we put on our anti-scam armor? Here’s the lowdown:
Verify Profiles: If someone’s asking you for money or personal information, take a look at their profile. Do they have a real job listed? Are there connections that make sense? Watch out for profiles with just a couple of connections or generic photos—they're probably phishing for trouble.
Watch for Red Flags: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. “$100,000 a year with no experience” is a pretty strong indicator that you might be about to step into a very sticky web.
Report Suspicious Activity: LinkedIn makes it easy to report questionable profiles or messages. Don’t let these jokers run wild; let the platform know what’s happening.
Stay Informed: Scammers are evolving all the time. Keeping yourself updated with the latest trends in online scams is key.

The Importance of Staying Vigilant
When in doubt, trust your gut feeling. If something seems off or suspicious, it probably is. Don’t let the fear of missing out on a potential job opportunity blind you from common sense.
In today’s digital age, it’s more important than ever to stay vigilant and protect yourself from scams. So don’t be afraid to ask questions, do your research, and never give out personal information unless you are 100% sure it is a legitimate opportunity.
Remember, the only guaranteed way to get rich quickly is by winning the lottery or inheriting a fortune from a distant relative (and let’s be real, how often does that happen?).
Don't fall for the promises of easy money through job offers that seem too good to be true.

And, If You Fall Victim To A Job Scam...
Don’t beat yourself up about it.
These scammers are professionals and they know how to manipulate people.
Take action by reporting the scam to LinkedIn or other relevant authorities, such as your local police department or the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
Also, make sure to warn others in your network so that they don’t fall prey to the same trap.
