Nobody Applied. Everybody Got Hired.
ILENE REIN | Executive Recruiter & Job Search Strategist | Pounding Pavement 101
I spent a weekend working an event I volunteer for every year. Long days and no pay.
By Sunday afternoon, two people in that room had job leads that are never going to show up on a job board.
Neither one was job searching out loud. Nobody handed anybody a resume. They worked next to the right people for two days and something opened up.
That happens constantly. Most job seekers never see it because they're at home refreshing Indeed.
Where the jobs actually live
85% of jobs get filled through networking. Around 70% of open roles never get posted publicly at all.
Think about that second number for a moment. Seven out of ten jobs are getting filled in conversations you're not in.
The ones that do get posted are the leftovers. Nobody inside the company could fill them through someone they already knew, so out they went to the job boards. That's what you're applying to. And you're applying to it alongside four hundred plus other people who found it the same way you did. I have even seen 1700 applications for just one job!
Then it gets worse on the recruiting side. You are not going to want to hear this, but the reality is that 98% of applications never reach a human eye at all. The ones that do get about five seconds, because Recruiters are reviewing close to 500 resumes a day.
A senior level job seeker in tech came to me after nearly 1,000 applications. A thousand. Employed the whole time, doing everything the standard advice says to do, and the standard advice was quietly eating a year of their life. And, as they were trying to adjust their job search approach to score interviews, they were receiving conflicting information from multiple sources.
Relationships are where jobs live. Most people hear that and immediately picture some awful mixer with a name tag and a plate of cheese. We have all been there.
That's not what this is.
Your Job Search Strategy Is Broken. Let's fix it.

Why volunteering works when cold outreach doesn't
Cold message somebody on LinkedIn and you're a stranger asking for something. They know it by the second line. Recruiters receive these messages all the time.
Volunteer next to that same person for a weekend, and you're just a colleague who got work done with them.
Walk into any volunteer room, and it's full of engineers, executives, managers, people who sign off on hires. None of them came to hire anybody.
But they're watching how you work. They see what you do at 4pm in the afternoon when something goes wrong and everybody's tired. That tells them more than an interview ever will, and the whole time you're not being evaluated so you're actually yourself.
A Technical Program Manager received a job offer while volunteering at an event after months of nothing. Wasn't the resume. It was getting out from behind the screen.
Another job seeking client of mine went from General Manager to VP the same way. That role was never posted anywhere.
The part nobody talks about
Job searching wears you down. The silence is the worst of it. You send things out, nothing comes back, and after a few months you start believing something's wrong with you. That's what a long search does. It's not a skills problem by the time it gets there.
Volunteering gives you the one thing a job search almost never gives you. A win.
You show up, you do something useful, somebody thanks you, and you go home having actually accomplished something that day. When everything else feels stalled, that matters more than it sounds like it should.
The American Psychological Association has research showing people who volunteer regularly report higher well being and lower rates of depression. UnitedHealth Group found 78% of volunteers said it lowered their stress.
I'm not going to pretend that fixes unemployment. It doesn't. But it changes what you sound like on the phone when the call finally comes, and that's not nothing.
How to pick where to go
Go where the people you want to work with already are. Industry associations in your field are the obvious start, and so is any alumni organization you've been ignoring since graduation.
Conferences need volunteers to run them and nobody ever signs up. Nonprofits are the sleeper, because the board is usually stacked with executives from companies you'd take a job at tomorrow.
Then show up more than once. One weekend and you're a face they half remember. Keep coming back and you're a person they know.
Don't walk in with an agenda. People smell it. Do the work, be good at it, and let the rest happen, because it does.
What this actually is
My clients average 6X faster than the people job searching alone.
It's not because they write better resumes than you. It's because they stopped waiting to be found and started to market themselves based on how Recruiters operate. There is no one way to find a job. There are multiple ways. My clients get the job search working on all cylinders, increasing their chances of getting noticed and hired faster and in their targeted job.
