If Your Resume Isn’t Making the Phone Ring, It Isn’t Doing Its Job
ILENE REIN | Executive Recruiter & Job Search Strategist | Pounding Pavement 101
You’ve rewritten it. Twice, maybe more. You’ve read it so many times the words stopped meaning anything.
And the phone still isn’t ringing.
A senior professional came to me after a full year of searching. Barely any interviews. Savings gone.
The first thing they asked me was whether it was time to give up.
They were sure they knew what was wrong. No specific degree. And their age. They’d rewritten the resume with AI, then ran it through an AI detector to check it. The detector caught it. So they rewrote it again, and again.
Then I asked how many calls the resume was bringing in each week.
They didn’t know. They’d never looked at it that way.

What a Resume Is Actually For
Your resume has one job. To make the phone ring.
Most people grade their resume like a term paper. They fuss over each individual word until it sounds professional enough, then send it out and wait. Recruiters don’t grade it at all. They look at hundreds of resumes a day and give each one about five seconds before moving on to the next person.
Five seconds. And I know you do not want to hear this, but 98% of applications never reach a human eye in the first place. Do the math on that one.
A job search that’s working should be bringing in 3 to 5 calls a week. Fewer than that and the resume isn’t doing its job. When something isn’t doing its job, we change it up. We don’t polish it one more time and hope.
No, Resumes Aren’t Dead
Forbes reported this week that traffic to the big job boards is up by tens of millions of visits year over year. The expert they quoted called it 'spray and pray'.
Within an hour, the comments filled up with people saying resumes are worthless now. Algorithms have broken the whole thing. Stop sending them. Build in public instead and let the work speak for itself.
Here’s what that misses. Recruiters are still the ones reading. Five hundred resumes a day, five seconds each, looking for three good candidates in the first hundred. Once they find them, the search stops. The pile got deeper this year. The number of people reading it didn’t.
That’s not a dead channel. That’s a crowded one.
Resumes are dead is a comfortable thing to believe when yours isn’t getting calls, because it means the problem is the system and not the document. Building in public and getting referrals does work. It also takes months. Someone who needs a paycheck in January needs the resume working now.

Why Plain Vanilla Gets Skipped
Their resume was plain vanilla. Every line described duties. Responsible for this. Managed that.
Recruiters aren’t searching for what you were responsible for. They’re searching for what you can do for the company that’s hiring. It’s not about you. It’s about what you can do for them.
I see the same thing from people with huge careers behind them. A senior executive came to me after nine months of searching. They’d rewritten their resume over and over, with AI and with paid resume services. Every version said the same thing, just in a slightly different way. Recruiters couldn’t tell where this person fit, so they moved on.
More rewrites won’t fix that. A different message and strategic plan will.
Everyone Sounds the Same Now
Here’s what makes it harder this year. Everyone is running their resume through AI. So everyone’s resume is starting to sound exactly alike.
When a Recruiter reads the same polished paragraph fifty times in a morning, nothing stands out. The person who gets the call is the one whose resume shows real results in their own words.
And there’s something else Recruiters are reading between the lines. Your resume is a sample of your writing. It’s an example of the quality of work you’d do for the company if they hired you.
This is your moment to put your best foot forward. Everything is on the line. If the resume is subpar now, a Recruiter has to wonder what your work will look like once you’ve got the job.
Test This Out
Try this tonight. Print your resume and fold over your name so you can’t see it. Read it as a stranger would. Be honest about whether you’d hire that person.
If the answer is no, we have work to do.
Then count your calls from the last two weeks. Count the Recruiters and hiring managers who reached out because of your resume. If you’re under three a week, your resume is sitting in the garage. It never gets taken out for a drive. You can be the most qualified person out there and still be the best kept secret in town.
What Changed for Them
That person came to me convinced the problem was them. Their age. The degree they never finished. So they kept signing up for more training, hoping the next certificate would finally make them good enough.
They already had the skills. What they didn’t have was a way to market them.
The resume was only one piece. Their LinkedIn profile wasn’t pulling in any Recruiters either. And they’d spent a whole year applying online and waiting, which is the slowest way there is to get hired.
So we rebuilt their entire job search strategy. We started with a new resume and LinkedIn profile. Then a real strategic job search plan for getting in front of the people doing the hiring, so they weren’t sending applications into the void anymore.
The biggest change happened in how they saw themselves. After a year of feeling unwanted, like damaged goods, they realized nothing was wrong with them. Their job search strategy was broken. And a strategy can be fixed.
My clients get hired 6X faster than searching on their own. Most of them spent months working hard on the wrong plan first.
If your phone has gone quiet, book a Recruiter Review. We’ll look at your whole search and find out what’s holding you back.
You don’t have to do this alone.
If you’ve been applying and hearing nothing back, there’s a reason. And a Recruiter can usually spot it fast.
