One Sentence in Your Cover Letter Is Costing You the Call.

You wrote your cover letter last week. So did the ten people who applied after you.

A hiring manager I've known for years reached out after going through the applications for one opening.

Eleven of the cover letters started with the exact same sentence. Word for word.

"I am excited to apply for this position, where I can leverage my skills and experience to make a meaningful impact."

Eleven different people, each with their own background and their own experience, and every one of them opened the same way.

So the hiring manager did what most hiring managers do when they see the same thing over and over. They stopped reading. Those eleven letters got one line each, and the resumes attached to them didn't get much of a look either.

That's the part that bothers me most. Those eleven people did the work. They just looked plain vanilla, like everyone else. No one stood out.

Everyone Sounds the Same Now

Job seekers are pasting the same job descriptions into the same AI tools and getting back nearly the same letter.

And I guarantee that the people on the hiring side notice. In Insight Global's 2025 survey of 1,005 hiring managers, 88% said they can tell when a candidate used AI on an application. And it can count against the candidate.

Here's what most people forget. That letter is a writing sample of your work. It's supposed to be your best foot forward. If your best work is subpar before you even have the job, the hiring manager assumes that's what your work will be like after they hire you.

Everyone's using AI, so everyone's letter looks the same. You're getting compared against every other candidate out there. When your opening line matches ten other people's, you've handed the Recruiter a reason to move on to the next one.

Cover Letters Still Get Read

A lot of people figure nobody reads cover letters anymore, so it doesn't matter what's in them.

That's not true. In a Resume Genius survey of 625 hiring managers, 83% said they read the cover letters they receive. Only 4% said they rarely or never do.

So your letter is getting read. It's just getting read for about one sentence if that sentence sounds like everybody else's.

And when the job posting says a cover letter is optional, send one anyway. Plenty of people skip it. Being one of the few who wrote something real puts you ahead before anyone opens your resume.

Think of it as free advertising space. It's your chance to showcase your experience and why you'd be a good fit, in your own words, before anyone else gets a say. Giving that up makes no sense.

What a Recruiter Is Really Reading For

Whether you meant it to or not, your letter shows how you think and whether you paid attention to the job specs for that particular job.

Most letters make the same mistake. They focus on what the candidate wants and where they want to grow next.

READ THIS NOW IF YOU READ NOTHING ELSE:

Job searching is not about you. It's about what you can do for them.

Here's the reality on the other side of the hiring table. A Recruiter is looking for the shortest distance between two points. They are operating at lightning speed. If they don't see within 5 seconds that you are a potential match for the job on their desk, they move on. Your job is to connect the dots for them so they want to call you. Show how what you've done lines up with what they need, so they don't have to figure it out. If you leave it up to them, you risk getting passed over.

That's the whole goal of the letter. Generate interest and generate the call. Nothing else.

Now, I will tell you, the hardest thing to do is to market yourself. You are just too close to it. You cannot see the label from inside the jar.

That's what I fix for job seekers. I want them generating many calls and talking to a lot of companies. Then you're in the driver's seat, and you get to choose the company you want to work for.

There's a whole science to writing a letter that gets the call. And it doesn't take an hour or an AI chatbot. My clients write theirs in under 3 minutes, without AI, and they sound like themselves.

If Your Letters Aren't Getting Responses

If you've been sending cover letters for months and hearing nothing back, the letter might be doing more damage than you think. For a lot of hiring managers, it's the first thing they read. When it sounds generic, your resume never gets a fair look.

There's nothing wrong with you. We just need to change how you're showing up on the page.
