Why Applying Fast Gets You Further Than Applying Perfectly
Most job seekers treat every application like a final exam. They tailor every bullet point, rewrite the cover letter four times, and spend an hour researching the company before they ever hit submit. And by the time they do, there are already 200 people ahead of them.
This is one of the most common and costly mistakes I see in job searches today.
The Window Closes Faster Than You Think
Job postings on LinkedIn can receive hundreds of applications within the first few hours of going live. Studies show that applications submitted early in a posting's life get significantly more attention from Recruiters than those submitted days later. By day three, many Recruiters have already identified their shortlist and moved on.
That is not an exaggeration. That is how the process actually works from the inside.
A 2019 study from Indeed found that nearly 50% of job seekers who applied within the first three days of a posting being live were more likely to advance to an interview. After that window, the odds drop sharply. You are not just competing with other applicants. You are competing with time itself.

The Trap Careful Candidates Fall Into
The problem is that careful takes time. And most job seekers do not realize they are setting themselves up to miss the window entirely.
They believe that a more polished application will make up for being late. Sometimes it does. But more often, the Recruiter never sees it because they have already moved forward. Remember, a Recruiter's job is to make placements. A perfectly written cover letter that arrives on day five is still a cover letter that arrived on day five.
This puts candidates in a position that feels impossible. Move fast and feel unprepared. Move carefully and lose the timing advantage. Neither option feels right.
What the Fastest Candidates Actually Do
The candidates who apply quickly are not cutting corners. They are not sending out generic resumes and hoping for the best. They are doing something most people never think to do.
They prepare everything before the job posts.
Their resume is already strong. Their LinkedIn is already optimized. They know exactly what to look for in a job description and can customize their materials in minutes instead of hours. When the right role appears, they are not starting from scratch. They are ready.
As I always say, the job search does not start when you find a job posting. It starts before you ever need one.
Speed Is a Strategy
Getting to that position does not happen overnight. But it also does not take as long as most people think. The candidates who consistently land faster are not necessarily more qualified. They just have a system in place that lets them move when it counts.
Most people are still building the engine while the race has already started.
In 30 minutes, I can show you exactly what needs to be in place before you apply to your next role and what is slowing you down right now.
